Dazzled But Sober
I watched over the lazy weekend the documentary (L'Amour Fou-Crazy Love) on Yves St. Laurent and Pierre Berge's relationship and evolution of YSL. Wow. It's quite slow, with interviews with Pierre (all subtitled) reflecting back to the times and hardships of sustaining a fashion house and relationship with Yves. Many pictures of their homes (Paris, Normandy, Marrakech), objets d'art, including Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian paintings. Pierre states that there were only two times Yves was happy, after each of his two collections were presented on the runway. Quickly after, even that night, his feelings would subside and he would slip back into the dark hole he often retreated to. It's a documentary on love, depression, success, fame and the build up of an empire-both in fashion and art. There is no denying the impact YSL has had on fashion and it's an intriguing film showcasing the highs and lows of fame and genius.

thanks for sharing, i definitely want to watch. it does seem like most great artists struggle with depression/unhappiness which feels so unfair, given the beautiful gifts they give the world.
